Science

Our science courses are designed to help our students develop analytical and critical thinking skills, and empower them to make ethical decisions. Based upon current trends in higher education, we have devised a dual track approach to science course offerings. Students are afforded the opportunity to pursue a Medical or Engineering science track.  Students may also apply for the IB Program.

All Freshmen take either Chemistry I or Honors Chemistry I.  Sophomores take Biology or Honors Biology (Biochemistry/Microbiology.)  Electives for Juniors include Forensic Science, Macrobiology/Environmental Science or Honors Chemistry II.  Senior electives include Physics or Honors Human Anatomy and Physiology.

Social Studies

The focus of the Social Studies Department is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible citizens in an ever-changing global community.  To this end, the Social Studies Department provides for the core requirements and offers a variety of electives.

All Freshmen are required to study World History.  Sophomores and Juniors take United States History I and II.  Honors courses are currently offered in World History and United States History I.

Beginning in Junior year, students have the opportunity to select elective courses.  Additionally, Juniors may apply to begin study in the IB Program

Business Courses

As freshmen, all students are required to learn keyboarding skills and the fundamentals of computer software applications. This enables them to become computer literate and master the proper way of typing a research paper -- essential skills for success in college and careers.

With SDA's proximity to Wall Street and the business capital of the world, SDA students may find themselves imagining what their lives would be like if they choose a business career. The elective courses offered to seniors can help them to see the possibilities and understand the qualifications they will need.

Guidance

In each of their first three years at SDA, our students have a formal guidance course requirement. In freshman year, the emphasis is on helping our students make a smooth and successful transition to high school. In the group guidance course, students learn good study skills and are encouraged to develop a sense of self-esteem. In addition, each student is assigned a guidance counselor.

Because we are a college preparatory, our emphasis is on readying our students for college. During sophomore year, students continue in a group guidance course, shifting their focus to career choices and standardized test-taking strategies. In junior year, the course centers on post-secondary plans, taking students through the entire college application process.

In addition to advising students about which courses would best meet their needs, the Guidance Department faculty members are also available to assist any student experiencing personal problems.

Physical Education/Health/Driver Education

The Physical Education curriculum focuses on the physical, social and emotional needs of each student. A variety of team, individual and life time activities are offered and students are required to take an active part in each class, meet the minimal skill requirements in each activity and pass a written test in the area. In addition to the required four years of physical education, health and driver education courses must also be taken by each student.

Student Course of Study

English

The SDA English Department provides a thorough language arts experience to all students, emphasizing reading, writing, vocabulary and the spoken word. Students learn research and critical thinking skills as well.

All students are required to complete four years of English. Freshman English requires students to read the different genres of writing, and engage in the various modes of writing. In subsequent years, students go on to study American Literature, British Literature, World Literature, and may choose from a variety of electives. All Sophomores also take an "S.A.T. Preparation" course. With the variety of English electives offered, a student at SDA could complete a total of six full-year English courses.

Fine Arts

SDA students are provided the opportunity to develop and improve their art and music skills. All freshmen are required to take an introductory fine arts course, while juniors and seniors have a variety of electives from which to choose.

Our students' impressive art work is displayed throughout the year for the school community and visitors to view. Students wishing to develop their music skills may complement their coursework by joining the prestigious and award-winning SDA Glee Club. The amazing voices of SDA students can be heard at many SDA and community events, and at competitions.

Foreign Language

SDA students are privileged with a rare opportunity of attending high school in one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the US, helping them to understand and respect differences. With this environment in mind, SDA language teachers bring students toward the primary goal of all language -- communication -- by emphasizing active class participation. They also use a variety of media (language tapes, movies) to increase student interest in and versatility with language.

All students are required to take a minimum of 2 years in either Spanish, French, Latin or Italian. Pending Department approval, each student is afforded the opportunity for advanced study in her chosen language.

Mathematics

SDA offers a challenging math program to all students, and an accelerated five-year math program to advanced students. The core math courses fulfill high school math requirements while preparing students for success in college math. Math instructors work to develop a strong foundation of mathematical skills in students and to enable them to reason "mathematically."

Students are required to participate in a minimum of three math courses, one during each of their Freshman through Junior years: Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. Accelerated sections of each of these courses are offered for advanced students. Those in the five-year math program have Geometry Accelerated and Pre-Calculus in their junior year and AP Calculus in their senior year.

Upperclasswomen may choose from many additional math electives, including College Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus Honors, AP Calculus, and Statistics. Students interested in computers may also choose to enroll in C++ and Visual Basic courses.

Religious Studies

As a Catholic school, St. Dominic Academy emphasizes the teachings and values of the Catholic faith within the school environment and through its religion classes and co-curricular activities. All students are required to take religion courses during every quarter/semester at SDA. Students learn about Catholic Christianity, study Christian and Jewish scripture, and develop moral reasoning skills.

All Juniors are required to perform 40 hours of service to put their faith into action. SDA students also participate in masses throughout the school year to observe holy days, holidays, and special occasions. Students actively contribute to these masses by serving as Eucharistic Ministers, lectors, Liturgical choir members, and in various capacities.

Students interested in religious/social justice issues have opportunities to become involved in the Dominican Youth in Action Club and Peer Ministry, to name a few.
