Saint Dominic Academy Dominoes Receive a Citation at the Hudson County Women’s History Month Ceremony

The Dominoes, Saint Dominic Academy’s award winning choir, have sung several times at the annual Women’s History Month ceremony held at the Brennan Courthouse in Jersey City. Numerous women of achievement are honored each year at this event.

This year, Dominoes Director Joseph P. Napoli, was surprised when The Honorable Doreen McAndrew DiDomenico, Ph.D, presented the Dominoes with an official citation acknowledging the Dominoes as young women of achievement who have “performed with poise and exceptional musicality” for many years. Dr. DiDomenico was a member of the first graduating class that Napoli taught at Saint Dominic Academy.

The Dominoes opened the ceremony, singing the National Anthem. Later in the ceremony Raven Lyles, a senior, sang the introduction to the piece For Good; a song with an appropriate message for the occasion: “Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” This song is always part of the Dominoes spring repertoire and serves as a farewell for the graduating class. Senior, Shaniza McClain and sophomore, Alex Loaiza sang a duet that began I’m Goin’ Up a Yonder.

Napoli introduced his choir to the distinguished women of achievement and dignitaries by reviewing the Dominoes own achievements of the last year; a performance with famed violinist Andre Rieu, a featured live appearance on Good Day New York, opening the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular and a sixth performance at Carnegie Hall on December 2nd.
Up next for the Saint Dominic Academy Choirs, which comprise the 80 voice Glee Club, the 35 voice Dominoes and the Show Choir, is their annual spring competition in Myrtle Beach and a May 1st Spring Concert at Saint Aloysius Church. The Glee Club will live up to its name and debut several songs from the hit show Glee at this concert.

An Autumn of Awesome Performances by The Dominoes

The Dominoes, Saint Dominic Academy’s award winning Chamber Choir, have been in great demand this autumn. Joseph P. Napoli, director of The Dominoes for 33 years explained their continuing popularity: “The Dominoes have become the “go to” group in the Archdiocese of Newark, Jersey City, Hudson County and beyond. They earned their reputation by delivering stellar performances for many years now. It seems that whenever I pick up the phone, someone is requesting a Dominoes performance.”

The Dominoes performed in many large venues in the past eighteen months;  the Nassau Coliseum (with Andre Rieu), Caldwell College and Carnegie Hall (with Tim Janis), and Radio City, where they opened the Christmas Spectacular. They also performed live on Fox 5’s Good Day New York on October 19th, 2010. “These performances were very exciting, but this season we are performing in local venues”, said Napoli. “These performances are more central to our mission of serving the archdiocese and our community.”

The Dominoes were the featured choir for the Catholic Schools Personnel Mass, held on Friday, October 7th at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. The Mass was celebrated by His Excellency, The Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark. The Dominoes were listed in the program by their formal name, The Saint Dominic Academy Chamber Choir.

Continuing a busy weekend, members of the Glee Club and Dominoes marched with Mr. Napoli at the Jersey City Columbus Day Parade on Sunday, October 9th. Mr. Napoli was being honored as the Dante Alighieri Society’s Teacher/Educator of the Year.

On Thursday, October 13th, the Dominoes opened the first annual Golden Door Film Festival at the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre. Performing in the elegant lobby of that historic theatre, they sang a touching rendition of America the Beautiful, as local actress Dorcey Winant read the Emma Lazarus poem “The New Colossus”. Academy Award winning actor, Paul Sorvino, was honored at the festival. Paul’s nieces, Rosemichele and Tegan, both attended Saint Dominic Academy in the early 1980’s and were among the first Dominoes under Mr. Napoli’s direction.

The next big performance for the Dominoes will be at the 3rd Annual Nourishing Your Faith Dinner on Wednesday, November 9th, 2011 at the Westmount Country Club, Woodland Park New Jersey. The invitation for this performance came from the Archdiocesan Center’s Office of Development and Stewardship.

As Napoli reflected on the Dominoes busy autumn, he noted that the annual Christmas Concert beckons just ahead in December. “We had to rehearse a great deal of non-Christmas music for our wonderful autumn performances, all the while remembering that the Glee Club’s and Dominoes’ season of Christmas performances begins when we return from Thanksgiving Break. The girls have been rehearsing Christmas all along”, Napoli said.
