Expectations:
You are expected to carefully read and think about the assigned books for the courses you will be taking in 2011-2012. There will be reading check quizzes and various written exercises involving all books in September. In addition, the books assigned for each grade level will be covered as the initial material for your English class in September. Each sophomore, junior and senior is also expected to prepare a written response from among the choices provided below. (Incoming freshmen do not respond to the following) It is necessary to complete one for each of the assigned books. These will be collected in September.
 
It is the sincere hope of the English department that the reading we are asking you to complete will provide you with some reading pleasure this summer. Please feel free to read many books of your own choosing as well!
 
Written response options:
Respond to any of the following for each of your assigned books. These responses should be in paragraph form and approximately 300-500 words in length.
 
1. Choose three quoted passages from the book and explain how each of these quotes relates to a main character, conflict or theme.
 
2. Select and discuss two key incidents in which a main character finds himself/herself in some type of conflict.
 
3. Discuss two key incidents that reflect how a main character experiences awakenings, discoveries and/or changes in attitude.
