SDA Freshman Wins Music Competition

SDA freshman Carolina Rial (2nd from R) was the Third Place winner in the 2019 New Jersey Shout Down Drugs music competition. According to their website, “Created in 2005, New Jersey Shout Down Drugs challenges high school students to create original music and lyrics with powerful substance abuse prevention messages to allow teens to deliver the prevention message to each other through their favorite medium of music. County finalists are chosen by peer judges to perform their original songs at the Annual Statewide Prevention Concert.” At the concert held on May 10, Carolina was awarded third place and a $2,000 music contract to perform her winning composition, “Breaking Boundaries,” at different events throughout the state during the year.  Carolina’s voice and composition can be heard on the website.  

As for her third place win, Carolina said, “I am very grateful to have been able to be a part of such an amazing program. Thank you so much A Partnership For A Drug Free NJ for giving me the opportunity to share the important message of teenage drug prevention through music. Feeling blessed to have placed 3rd on Friday (May 10) night.” 

Winning vocal competitions is not new to Carolina who was a winner in the Future Leaders Division in the New Jersey 2019 Arts for All Youth Music Competition held on April 7 in the Billy Johnson Auditorium at the Newark Museum.  According to, “Arts for All is a non-profit organization that is geared towards promoting opportunities for children to improve their knowledge and skills in the performing arts.”

Additionally, in October 2018, Carolina was a finalist in the Celebration of Music Talent Search competition (
