Students Explore Careers in Engineering

For the second consecutive year, Saint Dominic Academy STEM students in both 7th and 10th grades had the opportunity to explore careers in engineering through a workshop held at TITAN Engineers PC in Union, NJ.  The firm is owned by SDA alumna Cheryl Higgins Wong ’95 and her husband, Nicholas Wong, SPP ’94.

As part of the workshop, the girls were introduced to the various types of engineering disciplines and then had the opportunity to visit with individual engineers to learn about the projects that they were each working on.

According to their website (titanengineers.com), TITAN is a professional structural and consulting engineering corporation that provides comprehensive professional engineering services in structural design, investigation and evaluation. The students had the chance to learn so much as “Titan’s personnel experience encompasses a diverse spectrum of projects from designing steel and concrete high-rises to complex site development earth retention systems, from investigating major disasters to failed roof rafters and from evaluating large office complexes to retail facilities.”

A sophomore who attended the program said, “I had an amazing time at TITAN!! It was so cool to witness real live engineers in action, especially because 50% of them were women. To see an office that encompasses equality between men and women, was very inspiring. We got the chance to look at their current projects, and how they start from nothing and are able to create extravagant plans for buildings and structures. Not to mention that they have an office dog!! Overall, my experience at TITAN was an unforgettable and educational one, and I hope SDA students after me get the chance to go in the future!”

Another student shared, “I enjoyed being able to talk with the engineers and learn how they do their job, especially the women engineers!  It was a really empowering experience. The presentations were well thought out.”
