Hairspray at SDA

YOU CAN’T STOP THE BEAT of SDA’s Theater Arts Program as they prepare for the January 17th and 18th performances of HAIRSPRAY! Tracy Turnblad, a wide-eyed, enthusiastic high school student, dreams of being on the local TV show in her hometown of Baltimore during the 1960s. She is a kind soul who spreads her infectious positivity throughout town, fighting traditional views on body image and racial integration along the way. Whatever obstacles come their way, SDA’s production team is devoted to bringing audiences a fabulous show! Senior Rachel Perrie’s performance as Tracy is dynamic, and she is ably assisted by Veronica Dominguez as the ditzy Penny! Junior and Theater Arts newcomer, Avery Aquino is a wonderful Corny Collins, the media man; Senior Emily Perrie is engagingly comical as Edna; and Alyssa Fuentes is a suitably narrow-minded Velma. Senior McKayla Cintron has been impressing the cast with her incredible voice as Motormouth Maybelle! However, while it is important to give credit to the main characters, this production is truly an ensemble piece. There is a great sense of company, and the dancing, choreographed by 8th grader Jasmine Ibrahim (assisted by 8th grader Gabby Beredo), is full of energy and fun! This is a real feel-good production that you do not want to miss!  Hairspray will be running in ELAN at SDA on January 17th and 18th at 7:00p.m. Tickets may be purchased online here.
